The Power of Packaging and Customer Perception

August 13, 2014

Whilst sipping my cup of tea and chewing over a few biscuits this morning, I came across an article which outlined some reasons why packaging can increase sales (You can find it here). Although I completely agree with some of the statements made about emotional response and customer interest, one of the points that wasn’t covered very well was the impact of customer perception. If a brand sells luxury products, it needs to reflect this in its packaging and personality, and most customers will notice this and form their own impression of  the brand and it’s quality. However, their are instances where businesses use packaging as a way to deceive potential customers and get them to believe that something is of higher quality than it is. This is where the power of packaging comes in. If a design can lead a customer to believe that their products are of a better standard than that of a cheaper, less interestingly packaged product, then design can, and really does alter customer perception for the good or the bad.

Why Brand Personality matters in design.

July 14, 2014

Despite its relatively unknown status, brand personality is what gives a brand its character and originality. When we think of brand personality we usually focus on the messages that a brand can communicate through its identity and logo design, packaging, print and marketing collateral and digital media. If the visual side of your brand looks regimented and very corporate, you are likely to come across that way and may lose clients who feel intimidated by you.

On the other hand, if you come across too laid back, people may not take you and your brand seriously. With that in mind, it is very important to communicate the right messages to target the right audience.

Let’s take a look at a recent brand we designed for Tea Circus.

Strongman Tea-Packaging FIREYBREW VISUAL

The images above are the visuals we created for two different Tea Circus products. They wanted a brand that communicated fun and quirkiness whilst also appearing reputable and interesting. The stylised illustration helps to communicate the ‘fun’ aspect of the brand whilst they also help the customer to understand the type of tea that is inside the box. The ‘strongman’ portrays the strong tea product, whilst the ‘firebreather’ tea helps to portray the chilli ingredient in that particular tea. The similar layouts help to bring consistency to the range which is extremely important when it comes to brand extensions.

Brand personality is very important if you want to reside in the consumers memory, so take a look at some packaging and brand styles next time you are out and about and see if you can see what they are trying to communicate.

Design is the key

July 11, 2014

Design may seem like a waste of money to some, but to most others, design is the key to success. Why spend so much time and effort building a business that doesn’t communicate the right messages!

Design isn’t purely aesthetics, it’s a way to visually communicate messages and ideas, aspirations and future goals and a way to let your clients and customers see your potential.

Why we love packaging!

April 10, 2014

Packaging is one of those design areas that tickles our imagination and fires up our creativity. It takes a brand identity and brings to life with a physical extension of the brands character.

Packaging is a brilliant extension of a brand and should always be cherished and never underestimated.

Why design is essential to a successful business.

April 9, 2014

You often hear people taking about the benefits of marketing and social media when it comes to a successful business, and although both of these are indeed important, design is just as essential.

There are many people out there that don’t realise the benefits of good design and how this can help to increase the credibility, recognition and reputation of a business. A business identity is at the front of every connection and this is evident in any marketing or social media based awareness. Good design breaks boundaries, it builds bridges and forms relationships and also helps to give a business character and personality.

Design is essential for a successful business, especially in the day and age where image is important in many different industries, as it shows professionalism and passion for the product or service you are selling, and also helps to show off a businesses core values.

Why is branding so important?

April 7, 2014

Branding is a vital part of our business as we love to help build and maintain character and individuality for our clients businesses. There are a few reasons why we believe branding to be a very integral part of any business and wish to share with you our thoughts on the subject.

The first benefit of branding is that it gives a business character and personality, which are both very important in helping it stand out against the crowd. Without branding, businesses would not be able to differentiate against each other, leaving their clients confused and undecided.

The second benefit of branding is for aesthetic purposes. Everyone likes nice things and every one likes to look at nice things, so surely it would seem obvious to make a business look nice. Nice things attract, it’s as simple as that.

The third benefit of branding is that it unifies core values and helps external extensions become consistent. If you own or have ever owned a business, you will know how hard it can be to keep everything consistent and flowing effortlessly. Branding helps tie everything together, it’s the shoelaces on your shoes or the strings on your guitar. More simply put, branding helps to bind everything together and keep it working.

What are your thoughts on branding? Do you feel there are more important reasons aspects of branding than mentioned here?
